Find Your Why

We all set goals. We all have plans. Sometimes the goal and the plan is to do nothing. Sometimes it is to take over the world. Ok, so take over the world, take a nap, build a new widget, open a new store, make yourself a better person.

WHY????

Sometimes this is the biggest three letter word out there.

Lots of times we just go about our ‘routine’ because that is just what we do, other times we go and shake things up a bit.

WHY???

Why are we living where we are, not just that house, but that city? Why not move? Why not try a new country?

Why do we have this job? Did we just fall into it? Short term job now years old. Did we go to school for this? Is it all we hoped it would be? Why not change what we do for a living?

Why do we look like we do? Is that the hair colour that you still get compliments on? When was the last time somebody paid you a compliment on your clothes? Why don’t we just spend the same amount of time on ourselves vs time on others?

WHY???

We have all come to that place in our lives when it’s time to change something, but why?

There was an old story about a dog on a porch. He would sit there and moan and whine. One day someone came over and asked his owner why he moaned and whined so much. The owner said, “He is laying on a nail, but it doesn’t hurt enough to get up and move.”

WHY???

Look deep inside yourself. It may take some time and some real soul searching. Some of the reasons we do what we do are obvious, most are not. And all are personal. What is a reason for me won't be a reason for you. I tried for years to lose weight, tried all sorts of diet programs, trainers, ‘stuff’, but apparently my WHY wasn't strong enough yet.

Ask yourself some really hard questions. You may not like the answers but until you address your WHY, you will just moan like the dog.

Ask yourself;

what would happen if I fail
what would happen if I did nothing at all
would anybody notice a change.
am I willing to pay the price.
what’s the worst case scenario

Then,
ask yourself;

what would happen if I succeed.
what would happen if I only made it halfway.
what would it feel like to find some success on my change
do I care about the cost if success is achieved.
how will I feel when I have succeeded

So find your WHY, then do what it takes to eliminate your barriers and push forth to a whole new you.

Hooray for you!

You've been wanting to do this for so long.  You've thought about it.

Pictured it.

Wanted it.

Dreamt about it.

Even tried to achieve it before.

But today is different. Today is the first day that's going to make a difference. YOU ARE GOING TO SUCCEED THIS TIME.

It really doesn’t matter what “IT” is.

It may be going back to school.  It may be a new job.  It may be a new exercise routine.  It may be the commitment to finally lose those inches you don’t want.

It really doesn’t matter.  What matters is that you've decided today is the day you're going to begin.  Good for you!

This really is the hardest part.

We are wired to want more than we have; to be more than we are. But somewhere between wanting it and doing it, sometimes we get lost. Maybe the journey is just too large. Maybe you've shared your idea and it's been shot down. Maybe it's just too scary to make such a big change. There can be tonnes of reasons why you have either not tried before or failed and just quit before.

But that is all in the past.

Today is a new day.

Today you've made the biggest decision: you're going to do it.  So let's set you up for the the best chance of success. Here are four things you need to do: 

1. Write down your goals.

Write down your long term goal. What is the end game?

Now break your goal down into bite-size pieces. One of the reasons we quit is we don’t recognize the small victories on the way to the finish line. So, make small achievable goals that are not as far away as the finish line.

2. Find support

This can be tricky, but crucial. Find a person, or a group of people with whom you can share your wins and losses (and who you can be there for when they need support).

3. Have a reward

Keeping our goals within sight is really important but if we don’t celebrate our wins as they happen, we get defeated too much by the little setbacks.

Get a photo, write it out, keep it within sight and then go and get it when you achieve THAT goal.  Remember, we celebrate our kids finishing each year of school, each project, each sports meet, not just the end goal of graduating Grade 12.

4. Plan to enjoy your journey

This will not happen overnight, so enjoy the trip. Look at the scenery, read the map again, plan to make side trips. This is not just about the destination, it’s about YOU. All of YOU, the rest of YOU, plan to love YOU!

One final thing to remember:

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself any direction you choose.
You're on your own.
And you know what you know.
And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go….
