The Last Thing Losing Weight is, is Easy

There are a few lines that get me really angry. Most of the time they are spoken out of ignorance but with such conviction and that is what gets me so upset.

It is hurtful to people when someone states an opinion that is contrary to yours when you know that you are coming from a place of knowledge and/or experience and the other person is just stating their opinion. The line that has upset me enough to rant about it today it: Losing weight is easy, just eat less.

The biggest reason this upsets me, is that it is never said by someone who has ever had to deal their weight as a problem. It is like a woman telling a man how to deal with shaving their face every day. Yes, women have facial hair. Yes, some more than others. Yes, women shave…not their face, but they shave. In no way does this give a woman an opportunity to tell a man how to do it, or how simple it should be.

In the same way, some people think that they have the answer as to why others are overweight. Most people who are adults struggling with their weight have been doing it a long time and will likely be doing it the rest of their life. Gaining weight is something that does not happen in two weeks on vacation and it simply will not be solved that quickly either. Even if someone loses the weight that they want to. Even if someone gets to the size that they want to. Even if they have hit all of their targets, there will be that part of their mind that will always be concerned with the fact they may bounce right back to where they began or worse.

Losing weight is mostly mental. You can join any gym, sign up for every eating program, do whatever cleanse, club, group, latest craze, but if you are truly not ready, I’m very sorry, but it won’t work. You may lose some, but if our heart of hearts isn’t there, it won’t last.

When people have the attitude that it is easy, it is painfully obviously that it has never been a problem for them. The hardest part of that is that you know it, but they don’t. They may truly think that those 5 pesky pounds that haunted them before fitting into that dress qualifies them, but it doesn’t. Even personal trainers aren’t exempt. They may have the best of intentions, but again, they have the tools but no real empathy.

So, what do we do with that? There will always the knowitalls out there. So?

We need to look deep inside and find our solution there, inside.
Maybe the best solution is to make it look easy.

  • Take bite-sized steps toward getting your mind, heart, and attitude in the right place before jumping into the first program that you see.
  • Deal with the stuff on the inside that may need to be dealt with first before dealing with the food.
  • Set some realistic goals that work for you and are both achievable yet not easy.
  • Find true support to help you through your journey to new health, not the negative Nelly, truly the positive person.
  • Do it for yourself, just YOU.

Cinnamon Donuts

I feel a little like Homer Simpson right now. Hhhmmmmm donuts.

Part of having balance in your eating routine is allowing yourself to have treats. Our bodies crave sweet, salty, and fat. It’s not until we have too much of these things that it becomes a real problem, but if we can satisfy these cravings, then we will be less likely to overindulge when we do eat them.

Please let me know if you get the chance to try these, I’m going to go get some donut molds this week so that I can do the up right.

Thank you, Emma and Carla for another great recipe.

How Do You Get Back into Routine

So as I started up the computer I looked back at the calendar that I created for myself to help keep me on track with my blog posts. Apparently I have been neglecting my writing duties lately more than I realized.

I had set myself a weekly schedule so that I have a greater chance of not falling behind. The task of creating new and interesting content for you to read is sometimes challenging. It’s not that there is a lack of info out there. Actually some days I do a little research and find that there is too much info to sift through. Part of that is my newfound interest in healthy foods with our lifestyle changes. Some of that is that there seems to be a new interest in living a more healthy lifestyle. And then there is the fact that now that the internet is accessible for most western societies, people have decided that their opinions need to be shared as facts. With all this info out there, it becomes overwhelming to sort through it and find a truth that I can live with. I say it that way because it is not hard to find a contradictory opinion that is trying really hard to convince other people to think their way. After all is said and done, time marches on and blogs sometimes just don’t get done.

I do try to get ahead of the game. If I know that I am going to be busy on publish day, or I know that I have a busy week ahead, I do what I can to load up some posts so that I don’t fall behind. But, guess what, life happens.

The past two weeks have been some some of the craziest we, as a family, have had in a long time. We have had a number of different large events going on and the struggle to find time to do anything at the computer has been huge. And by the way, we are still waiting for our grandbaby to show its beautiful little face.

But, now what?

Well, now it’s time to get back in the saddle. Time to buckle down and refocus. The thing is, that it doesn’t matter what is going on in our lives, we will have disruptions. It’s called life. It is unavoidable. We can put all sorts of schedules in place, make lists upon lists, calendars with reminders, but at some point you just need to make the choice to let life invade your cute little routine or reject the outside world and stick to your plan.

Now, I get that at times, we are too eager to let the little distractions become big distractions and take us away from our plan and schedule. It is really easy to get distracted with life when you are doing something you don’t like or something that is really tough and you need a break. But you need to find the difference between participating in life or being too much in your routine.

There are a million and one reasons to let routine slide just a little.

  • Let’s face it, just one little glass of wine won’t kill you. You have been good all week…well most of the week…well you tried really hard and thought about it so much this week…you will be here next week, you’ll get right back at it then.
  • You are really sore from the workout the other day, and you are supposed to rest anyway, so
maybe you should just take another day of muscle recovery.
  • You don’t have weddings every weekend and you are supposed to have one reward meal a week anyway, so you may as well make it a great reward.

Making excuses becomes a habit if we let it. Being self discipline is really hard. But, and this is a really big but, you need to do what works for you. I have said this so many times while writing for you and it’s still true. But be true to yourself and you will find what it takes to get back on track. You also need to remember that if you are doing something that you have decided that you will be doing for life, then forgive yourself when you choose to participate in the outside world.

Our trainers are very busy people. They have multiple group classes a week. We are some of the personal training clients that they have. They both also have online clients. But the reason we chose them was because they train athletes to compete in bodybuilding competitions. Let me make something perfectly clear, I have no intention to get up on stage in a tiny little bathing suit and have a big theatre of people stare at me, but lots of people do and Dean and Leigh are good at it. So, when they tell me to do something, I do it. But, I don’t have a competition date that I am training for. I am training for the rest of my life so that I can be the best Heather Morneau possible.

  • So when I slide in my food plan, I get back at it.
  • If I take a few too many recovery days, I get right back at it.
  • If I get complacent with the details, I have Doug to remind me to stick to the plan. I am not suggesting that I can’t do it alone…oh wait maybe I can, but maybe I don’t have to.

The grand point that I am making is that;

  • We all need routine.
  • We all need a plan.
  • We all need a goal.
  • We all need to be disciplined in achieving our goals.
  • We all need to forgive ourselves when we are human and stray from the path.
  • So, here’s to another great week of goal achievement.

You got this!

Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude. - Thomas Jefferson

Rediscover Your Hunger Cues

This happens to be one of the most important things that we need to understand and I am really bad at this.

This happens to be one of my biggest faults.  I will go for hours without noticing that I should have eaten hours ago.  Then will sit to one of my favorite meals and gorge myself as if I will never eat again.  We, as a culture, have become way too dependent on our moods to determine when, what, and how much we eat.  As babies, eating is simple, when you are hungry you cry and eat.  When your are full you stop.  But, somewhere along the line we have stopped listening to that part of our brain and we overthink the whole eating process.

Please take the time to read this article and then spend some time paying attention to when, what, and how much you eat.  Sometimes it’s these little details that can make all the difference.
